Connecting a procurement platform to SAP: what to ask
Questions an SAP CoE should ask before connecting a source-to-pay platform: landscape coverage, how the connection is governed, and what posts to SAP.
An SAP CoE has seen enough bolt-on tools to be wary. The right questions are not about features. They are about the connection.
1. Which landscape, exactly?
ECC and S/4HANA are different conversations, and S/4HANA Private Cloud and S/4HANA Public Cloud are different again. Ask the vendor to name the landscapes it connects to and to set the landscape per customer, not per sales deck.
2. How many connections will my team manage?
One governed connection is easier to run than a dozen point integrations. Ask what the integration layer is, who operates it, and what your team has to maintain.
3. What posts to SAP, and what never does?
Get a list. Then ask the harder question: can any automated process, including an AI agent, post without a rule your team set? The answer should be no.
4. What if we are not only SAP?
Groups run more than one ERP. Ask whether the platform is independent of SAP and how it connects to other ERPs, through open APIs or an integration layer, and whether a custom connector is scoped as part of the project.
5. What can an AI assistant read, and can it write?
If the vendor offers an MCP or similar endpoint for AI assistants, ask whether it is read-only, how a connection is keyed, whether it can be scoped and allowlisted, and whether every request is logged.
How SupplierX answers
SupplierX is an independent source-to-pay platform. Its deepest native connectivity is with SAP ECC, SAP S/4HANA Private Cloud and SAP S/4HANA Public Cloud, through AeonX Data Setu, with the landscape set per customer. It connects to any other ERP through open REST APIs and AeonX Data Setu / ConnectX. Nothing posts to SAP without your rules. The SupplierX MCP server is read-only and governed: a per-tenant API key, scoped read capabilities, an IP allowlist, rate limits, and every request logged.
